Clips from Junk Tape

DaveOnKOKZ1989ish.mp3 (0:16 / 265KB) -- This is the earliest recording of my voice on the radio. I called up KOKZ one day and asked if I could introduce a song. The DJ, Peter Scott, said that I could just say my name and that I was listening to the station. He recorded it and put me before "Born in the USA", which was the song I wanted to introduce. This is the very first clip on Junk Tape One

DaveInKOKZStudio10-19-1990.mp3 (0:49 / 777KB) -- When I was 12, or possibly some time before that, I decided that I wanted to be in radio. I convinced my dad that I should write to my favorite radio station's studios, and ask if I could come in one night and watch Ron Newman while he was on the radio. Ron was very accommodating, and agreed to let me visit for 90 minutes, from 8:30 to 10:00. I actually stayed until 10:30, when he asked me if I wanted to go on the air with him. I of course said yes. My brother was at home recording. A one point Ron says, "You wanted to say hi to some people..." I did say hi to a few people, and then ended with "And I know you're all listening". It turned out that none of them were listening. Oh well. Towards the end of the clip, Ron says "Let's get into this Good Night Line thing"... and being the inexperienced radio person that I was in 1990, I nodded. Of course, you can't hear that.

Clips from the Debris Tape (Junk Tape Three)

RN_Dave_Shere_Style.mp3 (6:39 / 6.2 MB) -- One day I had access to an electronic piano. I recorded this clip and the next one. This one is of me playing the Van Halen song "Right now", with my own interpretations mixed in.

Daves_Serious_Song.mp3 (2:27 / 2.3 MB) -- I wrote this myself. I think I may have gotten carried away and made the heavy part too heavy, but overall I'm proud of this selection.

Clips from the Bits and Pieces Tape (Junk Tape Four)

Clips from the Shavings Tape (Junk Tape Five)

FNF_Intro_with_Comedy.mp3 (1:42 / 1.6 MB) -- This and the next three clips come from when I was doing the "Friday Night Flashback" on Mix 96 radio (KCVM) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The FNF was an 80s only "retro" show. This is the introduction to the show one night, with some "bits" done by some fellow personalities at the station. The content of the bits was written by me and they were gracious enough to record their voices for the show. The first bit is Scott Fenzloff doing a fake commercial; this is admittedly a takeoff from the "Buttermilk Biscuits" commercials on the "Prairie Home Companion" with Garrison Keillor on NPR. The second bit is done by Greg Alan and is your "standard legal disclaimer". I had fun putting this together and I think my fellow radio chums had fun producing it as well. This clip was recorded off the air from my home. (The other clips were recorded "behind the scenes" at the studios.)

FNF_Dog_Eats_Underwear.mp3 (1:16 / 1.2 MB) -- This clip from the FNF is a recording of a phone call that was included in a bit that I did where I was asking "What's the strangest thing you've ever seen your dog eat?" It really had nothing to do with the 80s, but it was fun and this was the best call of them all so I saved it.

FNF_Happy_Birthday_Call.mp3 (1:43 / 1.6 MB) -- This is a clip where I was attempting to make a fake phone call to a listener sound funny. I'm not sure I succeeded.

FNF_Lonely_Julie.mp3 (2:33 / 2.3 MB) -- This is one clip from a series of aired phone calls that were ongoing for a few weeks on the Friday Night Flashback. The premise was that there was a girl named Julie who worked as an RA at one of the dorms on the University of Northern Iowa Campus at Campbell Hall. She was working the front desk there (maybe she wasn't an RA I don't know) and she was there on Friday nights. She was always lonely because it was a Friday and people were out having fun while she was stuck at the dorm. So she, like any enlightened person, switched on the radio and called the DJ. I made light of her loneliness and made up this idea that we were advertising on the radio for people to go see her and keep her company. This call was just one in the series.

Hi David!

My brother sent me to your site today. I think you have the only clip in existence still of the old KOKZ days. I remember them well. Glad to see you are doing well.

Take care and best wishes,
